March 3rd update

The update release tomorrow will include a new Steam Linux version. It will have a number of improvements. The tool should update itself automatically when you run it (after the update is released).

The changes are:

* New command-line syntax *

The old "-update game dir username..." syntax will still work, so don't worry.

However, a more powerful syntax was necessary for some new features, and to prevent common mistakes. With the new syntax, each parameter is explicitly listed (instead of assuming they are all in the correct order). For instance:

steam -command update -game cstrike -password mypassword -username user ... etc

You can run "steam -?" to get the full syntax list.

* New "-verify_all" flag *

If you run an "update" command with "-verify_all", it will check that each file in the install matches the latest Steam version. If, somehow, your installation gets corrupted and will not run properly, this should bring it back to working order.

* "Resume" download feature*

Previously, if the tool lost connection to the Steam servers in the middle of an update, the next time you ran it, it would re-download some of the files it got the last time. This should be fixed now, it will pick up where it left off.

As you can read in the news:

quote:

- Offline Play
- Account validation (via e-mail)
- A new Half-Life 2 hardware survey
- Support for purchasing games through Steam

No new binaries for us server admins... (edit) ...which will improve cpu usage

Talking

Oooh.. resume! That'll be nice!

Watch out for the -verify_all flag though. It will disable metamod if you use it. (replaces the modified liblist.gam)

does the dedicated Server uses more traffic than before the update??

before the update i've had 1 to 1 ratio between out and ingoing traffic. Now i've got ~3x outgoing or is it just a coincidence?

Cheers

hmm, the high outgoing traffic is since the update - ok if not steam makes the traffic i have to check the config on the Server. I will install IAM/Iptables and check....

Thanks for your fast answer.
Have a nice weekend.

CPU Usage

10556 shawn2 25 0 196M 124M 5584 R 27.5 12.6 406:33 1 ./hlds_i686 -game cstrike +ip 69.93.231.51 +port 27015 +map de_dust+maxplayers 32 +

Is the offline mode update also applicable to the linux dedicated server?
Also, is it possible to get the updates without using the steam client? I.e some kind of patch file? If not, how long will it take to do all the updates from scratch on an isdn line?

Unhappy

Yeee, why are the bots gone?????? (again)

Or is it an attack on the Linux users again??
How much money do you get from MS, for destroying the unix distro's???

Valve tsk. tsk. tsk.

Electronic Arts is eating you.
Come on, you can do better than this.

Angry No answer

Still no answer from Valve, It's sad that they don't answer our questions. It's not a very professionel way to tread customers.

I would be more patient if I know that the bot's will come again and they are working on it.

As for now I'll like to get my money back, because I allready have payed for one Counter strike..
