Mouse Input Delay Guide

-=+Mouse Lag Guide+=- for all OS v 1.1 4/20/04

Tools for the Job:

+ Winrar
+ Logitech Mouseware / Microsoft Intellipoint
+ DirectX 9.0c

The Guide:

  • Install Winrar [use any decompressor capable of decompressing .exe files].
  • Install DirectX 9.0c [if not done already] as the latest DX contains input improvements. Reboot as necessary.
  • Locate the mouseware/intellipoint software package. Right-click -> select extract files... extract driver portion to a folder [eg tmp].
  • Uninstall mouseware/intellipoint software/mouse drivers currently installed. Reboot as necessary.
  • Open up device manager [by default: Right-click My Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager or control panel -> mouse], locate Mouse from list [if uninstalled old driver, unplug/replug mouse and let the device wizard guide you through process for next step].
  • Choose update driver option. Search for files, point to tmp [location driver portion exacted to].
  • Let it update your driver. Reboot as necessary.
  • Open up Steam -> Right-click Steam in Taskbar -> Open up Games -> Right-click desired game -> Choose 'Properties' -> Choose 'Launch Options' -> Add: -noforcemaccel string to box, ok.
  • Launch favorite MOD and play. All mouse issues should be fixed.

Other Suggestions:

+ Use a generic 2 button PS/2 mouse to isolate mouse as problem.
+ Lower directsound acceleration level or turn it off completeley [start menu -> run -> dxdiag -> Sound Tab -> Turn the slider down incrimentaly until it works.
+ Add -noforcemparms string to launch options box.
+ Uninstall current mouse drivers, let windows detect and install 'default' mouse drivers [the ones that come pre-installed into xp/2k].
+ [In game] Bring down the console [~] and type in m_filter. Should report "0", if not change to m_filter "0" or vice-versa.
+ If optical mouse, use non reflective surface, avoid real wood surfaces.
+ Experiment w/ video modes OGL/D3D.
+ Turn off num lock key.
+ Click on "Start" and select "Control Panel"
Click on Accessibility Options
On the Keyboard tab, ensure that "Use StickyKeys", "Use FilterKeys" and "Use ToggleKeys" are disabled
Also, you need to click on the "settings" button for all three options: StickyKeys, FilterKeys and ToggleKeys and ensure that the "Use shortcut" is unchecked on the dialog that opens.
+ If OS is WinXP and powertoys is installed, uninstall it.
+ Add vgui_emulatemouse "1" to config or type in console.
+ Click Start, Control Panel.
If necessary, click Switch to Category View.
Click Performance and Maintenance.
Under Control Panel Icon, click the System icon.
The System Properties window displays.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click Device Manager. The Device Manager window displays.
Select Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Right-click USB Root Hub.
Click Properties. The USB Root Hub Properties window displays.
Click the Power Management tab.
Clear the check box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power box. (This will prevent a power loss to the USB port.)
Click OK to close the USB Root Hub Properties window.

Bump... Problem still exists. Mouse guide was a good bandaid. Made it semi playable. I can play sniper or mg that doesn't require as much mouse movement. Thank you for taking the time.

Installing drivers for my Logitech optical mouse just messed stuff up. My sensitivity was still higher than my liking, even when both the system sensitivity and in-game sensitivty were both at their lowest values.

An audio process (CTHELPER.EXE) sometimes consumes a large amount of memory and is usually the sole cause for mouse lag with my computer.

Everyday I hear another player complaining about it just starting to happen. It's spreading like a virus.

If youre mouse sens is too high, try adding -noforcemspd string to the launch options field box.

CTHELPER.EXE: This is installed with the SoundBlaster Audigy2 drivers. It takes about 4 MB of RAM.
