Actiontec Product Users.

Hello, are you using an Actiontec Product and recieving errors? There are a few ways to fix this.

Some of the Errors that you might be seeing are:

"Bad Command Character in Client Mod."

"Bad Parse in Client Command."

"CMD_MAXBACKUP HIT."

You may also notice that you might be getting Disconnected more often if you are using your mic a lot.

Things that we have tried in order to get these Problems resolved are:

Contacting Actiontec to put out a FirmWare Upgrade. From what I know the last one was I think in 2002. But I guess that they said that they are not going to do it.

Trying to put the Modems into DMZ Mode.

Trying to put the Modems into Transparent Bridging Mode.

Trying a few other things and they did not resolve these Problems.

1. Get a new ISP<----This is what I did, I now have Charter Internet.

2. If your ISP is Qwest Call them and tell them that your Modem is giving you Errors while your playing online<----I did call them but instead we just got Charter Internet. However they did say that they were sending me a new Modem for free, but mine was Broke. How I think it Broke was by setting it into Transparent Bridging Mode (my Internet just went out). If they say that they wont send you a new one because of the Error go set it in Transparent Bridging Mode. If you have a day or so you might want to try this.

What Transparent Bridging Mode is, is I guess like a Super DMZ Mode.

3. If your ISP is not Qwest Call your current ISP and ask them about the Error and see if they send you a new Modem for free, if not set it in Transparent Bridging Mode.

4. Buy a new Modem<----Check out your Local Computer Store(s).

Also, to add to this Thread. If you have an Actiontec Product and are receiving errors or other Problems other then the ones I described Please let me know and I will try to see what is going on with that and try to give a Detailed Solution in this Thread.

Some other things to be Aware of. If you go to www.Qwest.com and are going to try to get ahold of Actiontec make sure that you dont click on the Actiontec Phone Number. Call you ISP because Actiontec has a $29.99 Fee for calling for help.

And when you do reach a number with someone that can help you with either getting a new Modem or trying to resolve this make sure you are very detailed. And make sure that they understand what you are trying to do or resolve.

-------------------------------

If anyone else has anything to add to this thread with a Fix, a new Firmware Upgrade from Actiontec, or anything it may be Please be sure to post.

-Thanks, ShUtY.

Unhappy

does the 640kb steaminstall.exe need the internet for completion. mainly to get the steam.dll file it needs and crashes on when it can't find it?

i have a
Actiontec dsl/gateway modem. GT701-WG
My Isp is qwest.

wed. this whole thing started with a "cannot connect to steam network".
after waiting and trying it again for about 5hrs, I uninstalled steam.

Now I can't reinstall steam. get a
"Steam.exe (main exception): unable to load library steam.dll" error.

again I do have a actiontec GT701-WG modem, however never(and I do mean never) had problems to this extent before.

Ok, so I'm now thinking that the different Models of the Actiontec bring up different Errors. 1CSeroutofmany I would suggest that you call Qwest Today and then there will be a Computer telling you to Press 1 to lead you to this place and Press 2 to go to this place, (kind of like an Answering Maching on a Telephone) go to talk to someone from the Internet Service and make sure its the right place that you are talking to, I do know that when we called Qwest we got Transferd I think 2-5 times trying to get to the right place.

Then tell them that you Play an Online game and you are recieving Errors because of your Actiontec. Then they will most likely help you solve it or send you a new Modem that should work just fine. If they dont just tell them your thinking about switching ISP's if it doesnt get resolved.

Then if you need to Read off the stuff that I have posted in this Thread to them, and if they ask for a link give it to them and tell them to read the First Post in it.

That should help and hopefully you can get a new Modem Overnighted to you. Make sure you tell them your Address to send it to before they go off on their own and send it to an Address they think your at. I know that mine ended up getting sent to a Different Address so we just Switched ISP's because they kept sending stuff to that Address even after telling them that we dont live at that Address and giving them our correct Address.

Well seems simple enough however. I feel a little bad calling them and requesting action, when my setup worked before the wed update. U know what I mean? the only change was steam. not my modem.

not trying to start anything here. just need to see your logic. I am thinking about calling them and asking if they made any changes in their network strucure, like updated any firmware on their end.. Multiple things could have happened (at once) on wed.. lol

do you see my logic.. ?

A post from 1CSeroutofmany.

quote:
Figured out why I could'nt connect to steam network!!!!!!
Turns out (somehow) my DSL/router firewall settings had been changed from basic to Low!!!!!!!! have no clue how, Have in the past put in on low and tried steam, and saw it did'nt work that way. I doubt my isp did it.

I'm concluding that my modem for some reason found that setting to be needed, and set it that way on weds upon boot up.

So if you have a Actiontec dsl/gateway modem. model GT701-WG, or any router/modem for that matter. For GT701-WG, goto (in internet browser) 192.168.0.1 and go to advanced setup, then see if your firewall is set to low or not. if so, put it to basic..

am updating everything in steam, and cs now. I hope everything goes o.k.

I wish I did'nt have to put in new hdd and install xp just find this information out. but O well, whatever means to an end huh? lol

thanks to any and all for help or suggestions during my time in need.. I will be sure to come back and help reinforce the idea that something(besides steam) is probably at fault.

Like I said I did'nt change my firewall setting, that just reminded me, you don't have to change something for something to change. lol
